In 1989 I went for the first time to New York and took advantage of an introduction made by youngest brother Geoffrey to look up an acquaintance of his, Jane Couceiro, who lived in Manhattan. We got on well and went to the theatre a couple of times and in subsequent Christmas cards exchanged notes about plays we had seen.
When I started a few years later to use a computer, I began making use of these notes to include in letters to other people, and hence grew the tradition of my Christmas letters. Slightly edited, they are reproduced here. (Some of the URLs have been updated; others may still not work.)
